About NʼDjamena
N'Djamena: Capital on the Chari River
N'Djamena, Chad's capital since independence in 1960, sits at the confluence of the Chari and Logone rivers, directly across from Kousseri, Cameroon. The city of roughly 1.5 million is the country's political and commercial centre, home to the National Museum of Chad, which holds prehistoric finds from the Sahara and the skull of Toumaï, a hominid dated to approximately 7 million years ago. The Grande Mosquée, built in the 1970s with Saudi funding, anchors the city's central quarter near Avenue Charles de Gaulle.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate along Avenue Félix Éboué and near the Quartier Administratif. Business travellers — NGO staff, diplomats, and regional traders — make up the majority of guests. Options range from international-standard properties with generators and security perimeters to smaller guesthouses in Moursal and Farcha districts.
Practical Tips
- Entry: A visa is required for most nationalities; obtain one before arrival.
- Currency: The Central African CFA franc (XAF) is the local currency; ATMs are limited.
- Climate: The dry season runs November to March — cooler and less humid than the April–October rains.
- Transport: Hassan Djamous International Airport sits 3 km from the city centre.
