About Nanjing

Nanjing: Six Dynasties Capital on the Yangtze

Nanjing served as the capital of China under six dynasties and twice as the Republic of China capital (1912–1949). The Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, completed in 1405, anchors Purple Mountain (Zijin Shan) on the city's eastern edge. The 14.5 km Ming City Wall — the longest surviving city wall in the world — still encircles much of the old town. Fuzimiao (Confucius Temple) lines the Qinhuai River with restored Qing-era teahouses and street-food stalls selling salted duck, the city's signature dish.

Where to Stay in Nanjing

Hotels concentrate in three corridors: Xinjiekou, the central business district around its namesake metro interchange; Gulou, north of the old drum tower with university cafés and independent restaurants; and Fuzimiao, suited to visitors focused on heritage sites along the river. The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall in Jiangdongmen lies 4 km west of Xinjiekou and draws visitors year-round.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Nanjing Lukou International Airport is 35 km south; the S1 metro line connects it to the city center in about 55 minutes.
  • Rail links: High-speed trains reach Shanghai Hongqiao in 1 hour 10 minutes and Beijing South in under 4 hours.
  • Best season: April and October offer mild temperatures; July–August brings high humidity above 35 °C.
  • Transit: Metro lines 1–4 cover major attractions; single-ride fares start at ¥2.
