About Xianju
Xianju: Volcanic Karst and Zhejiang's Hidden Gorges
Xianju sits in the mountainous interior of Taizhou Prefecture, Zhejiang Province, roughly 280 km south of Hangzhou. The city anchors Xianju National Scenic Area, a protected landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity that left sheer rhyolite columns, narrow gorges, and tiered waterfalls across the Yongning River basin. The centrepiece formation, Shenjian Yan (Divine Arrow Rock), rises roughly 170 metres and draws hikers and photographers from across eastern China.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels cluster along Anzhou Street and near the scenic area's east gate in Baita Township. Visitors arriving by rail use Xianju Station on the Yong-Tai-Wen high-speed line, which connects to Wenzhou in under 40 minutes and to Hangzhou in approximately 90 minutes. Local buses serve the main gorge trailheads; private cars or taxis reach the more remote Shiniugang wetland reserve to the north.
Practical Tips
- Best season: April–June for waterfall volume; October for clear skies and autumn foliage on the canyon rims.
- Trail difficulty: Shenjian Yan loop runs about 8 km with significant elevation — pack trail footwear.
- Entrance fees: Xianju Scenic Area charges separate tickets for each sub-area; budget two days to cover the main sections.
- Accommodation: Mid-range guesthouses near Baita gate offer the closest access to morning gorge light.
