About Xiamen
Xiamen: Fujian Coast's Colonial Port and Island Gateway
Xiamen sits on the southeastern coast of Fujian Province, separated from the mainland by a narrow strait and connected by five causeways and a 6.4 km underwater rail tunnel. The city rose to prominence as a treaty port opened to foreign trade in 1842 following the First Opium War, and the legacy of that era survives on Gulangyu Island — a 1.78 km² pedestrian island packed with 931 protected colonial-era mansions, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site listed in 2017. The island is reachable by a 6-minute ferry from Dongdu Terminal.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate in three corridors: Siming District along the waterfront promenade, Haicang on the western shore for business travelers, and the university quarter near Xiamen University (founded 1921) for budget and mid-range options. The Zengcuoan fishing village district, east of the campus, draws younger travelers for its art studios and café lanes. Gulangyu itself hosts a handful of boutique guesthouses within the heritage zone.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) sits 10 km northeast of the city center; Airport Line 1 metro reaches the waterfront in under 25 minutes.
- Ferries: Book Gulangyu ferry tickets online ahead of public holidays — daily capacity limits apply.
- Climate: Typhoon season runs June through September; pack a compact rain shell.
- Language: Hokkien (Minnan) is widely spoken alongside Mandarin in markets.
