About Dominical

Dominical: Pacific Surf Town on Costa Rica's Southern Coast

Dominical sits on Costa Rica's Pacific coast in Puntarenas province, roughly 45 km south of Quepos and 190 km from San José. The town is built around a powerful beach break that draws surfers from across the Americas, with swells regularly reaching 2–3 metres during the May–November wet season. The surrounding rainforest meets the shore along Playa Dominical, a 3 km stretch of dark sand backed by palms and small surf-oriented businesses.

Where to Stay

Hotels range from beachfront hostels to hillside jungle lodges above town with Pacific views. The Dominicalito cove, 2 km south, offers calmer water and quieter lodging away from the main beach. Several eco-lodges operate in the hills along the road toward Escaleras, a neighborhood known for canopy views and high bird diversity.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Shared shuttles from San José take approximately 4 hours; public buses stop on the main road through town.
  • Surf safety: Rip currents are strong on Playa Dominical — beginners should head to Dominicalito's calmer south end.
  • Nearby: Marino Ballena National Park, 15 km south near Uvita, hosts humpback whale watching from July to November and exposes the Whale Tail rock formation at low tide.
  • Dry season: December through April brings consistent sunshine and lighter offshore winds.
