About Komarna

Komarna

Komarna is a small coastal settlement in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Croatia, positioned at the mainland approach to the Pelješac Bridge. The cable-stayed bridge — 2.4 km long and completed in July 2022 — connects the Croatian mainland to the Pelješac Peninsula across Mali Ston Bay, eliminating the need to pass through Bosnian territory at Neum. The village faces the Neretva Channel and sits roughly 60 km northwest of Dubrovnik's Old Town.

Travelers stay in Komarna primarily as a gateway to the Pelješac Peninsula, which produces some of Croatia's most regarded red wines — Dingač and Postup, both made from Plavac Mali grapes grown on steep south-facing slopes above Potomje. The medieval salt town of Ston, with its 5.5 km defensive walls among the longest in Europe, lies about 15 km west along the peninsula. Korčula Island is reachable by ferry from Orebić, a 40-minute drive from Komarna. The Neretva Delta wetlands, important for migratory birds and river fish farming, are a short drive north toward Metković.

The coastline is rocky Dalmatian karst with clear Adriatic water and limited tourist infrastructure compared to Split or Dubrovnik. Split Airport lies approximately 85 km north via the A1 and coastal D8 highway; Dubrovnik Airport is around 70 km south. Intercity buses stop along the D8 coastal road.
