About Šibenik
Šibenik: Dalmatian Stone City on the Krka Estuary
Šibenik sits at the mouth of the Krka River on Croatia's central Dalmatian coast, 80 km north of Split. Founded in the 11th century, it is the oldest native Croatian town on the Adriatic — unlike Zadar or Split, it was never a Greek or Roman colony. The Cathedral of St. James, completed in 1536 after 105 years of construction, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built entirely from stone, with no brick or wood in its structure. The old town climbs steeply from the waterfront toward St. Michael's Fortress, which now hosts open-air concerts each summer.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate in two zones: the old town (Stari Grad) for stone-walled boutique rooms within walking distance of the cathedral, and the Brodarica–Solaris coastal strip 5 km south, where larger resort properties face the Šibenik archipelago. The nearby Krka National Park entrance at Skradinski Buk is 14 km northeast — many visitors base here to avoid Split's crowds.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Šibenik lies on the A1 motorway; the nearest airport is Split (SPU), 75 km south.
- Krka day trips: Book park entry online in advance; summer queues at the gate are long.
- Old town parking: Park at Baldekin lot outside the walls — cars cannot enter the historic core.
- Season: Peak crowds run July–August; shoulder season (May, September) offers cooler temperatures and shorter lines at the cathedral.
