Šibenik: Dalmatian Stone City on the Krka Estuary

Šibenik sits at the mouth of the Krka River on Croatia's central Dalmatian coast, 80 km north of Split. Founded in the 11th century, it is the oldest native Croatian town on the Adriatic — unlike Zadar or Split, it was never a Greek or Roman colony. The Cathedral of St. James, completed in 1536 after 105 years of construction, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built entirely from stone, with no brick or wood in its structure. Hotels concentrate in two zones: the old town (Stari Grad) for stone-walled boutique rooms within walking distance of the cathedral, and the Brodarica–Solaris coastal strip 5 km south, where larger resort properties face the Šibenik archipelago. The nearby Krka National Park entrance at Skradinski Buk is 14 km northeast — many visitors base here to avoid Split's crowds.
