About Willemstad
Willemstad: Dutch Colonial Capital of the Southern Caribbean
Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, holds UNESCO World Heritage status for its historic inner city — designated in 1997 for the Dutch colonial streetscapes that line Sint Annabaai harbor. The Handelskade waterfront in Punda is the most photographed stretch: rows of 18th-century merchant houses painted in ochre, coral, and turquoise, reflected in the calm harbor water. The Queen Emma Bridge, a floating pontoon bridge first built in 1888, connects Punda to Otrobanda and swings open to let cargo ships pass through.
Where to Stay in Willemstad
Most hotels cluster in three areas. Punda suits travelers who want walkable access to the Floating Market, Fort Amsterdam (built 1635), and the Mikvé Israël-Emanuel Synagogue (1732, the oldest in continuous use in the Americas). Otrobanda offers quieter streets and boutique conversions of colonial mansions. Pietermaai, a former residential quarter 10 minutes east of Punda on foot, has seen significant restoration since 2010 and now anchors a concentration of design hotels and restaurants.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The historic center is walkable; taxis are metered and available outside the Rif Fort complex.
- Climate: Willemstad sits outside the Atlantic hurricane belt; average temperatures stay near 28 °C year-round with reliable trade winds.
- Currency: The Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG) is legal tender; US dollars are widely accepted.
- Flight access: Curaçao International Airport (Hato) is 12 km northeast of Punda, roughly a 20-minute taxi ride.
