Santo Domingo: Capital of the First New World City

Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the Americas, established in 1498 on the western bank of the Ozama River. The Zona Colonial — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 — packs the Catedral Primada de América (completed 1541), the Alcázar de Colón, and the Fortaleza Ozama into roughly 1 square kilometre of cobblestone streets. The Malecón (Avenida George Washington) stretches 9 km along the Caribbean coast and anchors the western hotel corridor.

• Climate: Temperatures hold between 24 °C and 32 °C year-round; the hurricane season runs June–November.
• Airport: Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) sits 25 km east of the Zona Colonial — allow 40 minutes by road in normal traffic.
