About Bahir Dar

Bahir Dar: Lake Tana, Blue Nile Falls, and Island Monasteries

Bahir Dar sits on the southern shore of Lake Tana — Ethiopia's largest lake at 3,600 km² — roughly 350 km northwest of Addis Ababa by road. The city serves as the capital of the Amhara Region and anchors one of East Africa's most historically layered landscapes. Thirty-seven islands dot Lake Tana, and at least 20 host medieval Ethiopian Orthodox monasteries, some dating to the 14th century. The Blue Nile exits the lake here before dropping 45 metres at Tis Abay (Blue Nile Falls), located 30 km southeast of the city centre.

Where to Stay

Hotels concentrate along the lakefront boulevard and near the city market. Gion Hotel and properties on the peninsula offer direct lake views. Budget guesthouses cluster around the bus station, while mid-range options line Haile Resort Road. Most visitors use Bahir Dar as a base for boat trips to the island monasteries and day excursions to the falls.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Bahir Dar Abebe Bikila Airport receives daily flights from Addis Ababa (approx. 1 hour).
  • Boat trips: Hire a motorboat at the main pier for monastery circuits; half-day trips typically cover 3-4 islands.
  • Falls visit: Allow a full morning for Tis Abay — the walk from the parking area is 20-30 minutes each way.
  • Climate: The dry season runs October to May; the rainy season (June–September) swells the falls but muddies roads.
