About Lalībela
Lalibela: Ethiopia's Rock-Hewn Holy City
Lalibela, a highland town in the Amhara Region of northern Ethiopia, sits at 2,630 metres above sea level in the Lasta Mountains. The town is defined by eleven medieval churches carved directly into red volcanic rock, commissioned largely under King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Bete Giyorgis (the Church of St. George), a cross-shaped monolith cut 12 metres deep into the earth, is the most photographed. UNESCO inscribed the complex as a World Heritage Site in 1978.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Hotels cluster in two areas: the lower village near Bete Medhane Alem, the largest rock-hewn church in the world at roughly 33 metres long, and the upper hillside above the Yemrehanna Kristos access road. Walking between church clusters takes 15–20 minutes on steep stone paths. Ethiopian Airlines operates daily flights from Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport to Lalibela Airport, a 75-minute journey; the overland route covers approximately 700 km.
Practical Tips
- When to visit: January's Timkat (Epiphany) festival draws tens of thousands of Ethiopian Orthodox pilgrims — book accommodation months ahead.
- Altitude: At 2,630 m, allow one day to acclimatise before long walks between church sites.
- Entry fees: A multi-site circuit ticket is required; guides are available at the main entrance to the Northern Church Cluster.
- Currency: Carry Ethiopian Birr in cash — card acceptance is limited outside larger hotels.
