Angers sits on the Maine River in the Loire Valley, roughly 300 km southwest of Paris by road and about 1h 30min by TGV from Montparnasse station. The city of 160,000 anchors the Anjou region — historically a seat of the Plantagenet dynasty — and draws visitors primarily for its medieval fortress and one extraordinary textile work. The Château d'Angers, built between 1228 and 1240 under Blanche of Castile, houses the Apocalypse Tapestry: a 14th-century woven cycle originally 140 metres long, now the largest surviving medieval tapestry in the world at around 103 metres. That single object alone justifies the trip for many cultural travellers.

Beyond the château, Angers has a compact historic centre with the Saint-Maurice Cathedral — a 12th–13th century Gothic structure with distinctive Angevin vaulting — and the Terra Botanica theme park dedicated entirely to the plant world, the first of its kind in Europe. The city also functions as a university town, with roughly 40,000 students giving the centre a lively café and bar scene around the Place du Ralliement. Wine tourism is a practical draw: the Anjou and Saumur appellations begin just outside the city, and several Loire Valley producers offer tastings within a 30-minute drive.

Angers airport (ANE) handles limited domestic and seasonal European routes; most international visitors arrive via Nantes Atlantique (NTE), approximately 90 km west. The city centre is walkable, and a free electric bus network (Irigo) covers the main districts.
