About Grenoble
Grenoble: Alps Gateway at the Confluence of the Isère and Drac
Grenoble sits at 214 metres elevation in a natural basin where the Isère and Drac rivers meet, ringed by three mountain ranges — the Chartreuse, Belledonne, and Vercors massifs. The city of around 160,000 residents is the prefecture of Isère department and has been a centre of scientific research since the 19th century; today it hosts the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and Institut Laue-Langevin, drawing researchers from across Europe. The Bastille fortress, reached by the Télécabine de Grenoble-Bastille — the oldest urban cable car in France, opened in 1934 — gives a panoramic view of the entire basin from 476 metres.
Where to Stay in Grenoble
Hotels cluster around the Gare de Grenoble quarter for rail access, and along Place Victor Hugo and the pedestrianised Rue Félix Poulat corridor in the city centre. The Championnat and Île Verte districts offer quieter options closer to the river. Ski resorts such as Chamrouix (28 km) and Les Deux Alpes (74 km) are accessible by regional bus from the gare.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: TGV from Paris Lyon station takes roughly 3 hours; Grenoble is also 103 km south-east of Lyon.
- Getting around: Tram lines A, B, C, and D cover central Grenoble; the TAG network includes buses to outer districts.
- Season: July and August bring summer hiking; December to March is peak ski season — hotel rates rise sharply in both windows.
- Altitude note: Pack a light layer for evenings even in summer; temperatures drop quickly after sunset in the basin.
