La Douze

La Douze is a rural commune in the Dordogne department of southwest France, situated in the Périgord Noir region roughly 15 kilometres east of Périgueux. The village sits within a landscape defined by limestone plateaus, oak and chestnut woodland, and the river valleys that carve through the area. The Périgord Noir label comes from the density of these dark oak forests — not from the famous black truffles, though those grow here too, harvested between November and March.

Visitors come primarily for slow-travel immersion in classic Dordogne countryside. The surrounding area offers access to prehistoric cave art sites — Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, the capital of prehistory, lies about 30 kilometres south — alongside Romanesque village churches, walnut orchards, and foie gras producers that define the regional food economy. Cyclists and walkers use La Douze as a quiet base for the Vézère Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage corridor since 1979.

Accommodation in La Douze and its immediate commune runs to chambres d'hôtes and small gîte rentals rather than large hotels — the nearest concentration of hotel stock is in Périgueux to the west. The D6089 road connects the village directly to Périgueux, making day trips straightforward. Summer highs average around 26 °C; the truffle season and foie gras markets draw visitors from October through February.
