About Mauzac-et-Grand-Castang

Mauzac-et-Grand-Castang

Mauzac-et-Grand-Castang sits on a wide bend of the Dordogne River in the Périgord department, roughly 25 km east of Bergerac. The commune formed from the merger of two villages — Mauzac and Grand-Castang — and today covers a landscape of river cliffs, oak woodland, and cultivated terraces typical of central Périgord. The Dordogne here runs calm and broad, making this stretch one of the most-used launch points for canoe and kayak descents toward Trémolat and Limeuil.

Visitors are mostly outdoor travellers and cyclists following the Vézère-Dordogne greenway network, alongside fly-fishers drawn to the river's reputation for trout and shad. The surrounding Périgord Noir countryside supplies walnut oil, foie gras, and Monbazillac wines produced within a short drive. Trémolat, 4 km downstream, holds a medieval church and the famous Cingle de Trémolat oxbow — a panoramic viewpoint above the river that brings day-trippers along the D31 road.

The commune has no railway station; the nearest TER services run from Le Buisson-de-Cadouin, approximately 8 km to the south. Most visitors arrive by car via the D29 or D31 routes connecting to the A89 autoroute near Périgueux.
