About Metz
Metz: Gothic Amber Light and the Moselle Confluence
Metz stands at the junction of the Moselle and Seille rivers in the Grand Est region, 54 km north of Nancy and 160 km east of Paris by TGV. The city's defining landmark is Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, whose 6,496 square metres of stained glass — the largest surviving collection in the world — cast amber and violet light across the nave. Construction spanned the 13th to 16th centuries, and the western portal still bears work by Marc Chagall, completed in 1963. The Place Saint-Louis, a 14th-century arcaded square, anchors the medieval quarter and hosts a weekly market selling Lorraine mirabelle plum products every Thursday.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate in three zones: the Centre-Ville around Place de la République, the Nouvelle Ville (a Prussian-era district built after 1870 with wide limestone boulevards), and the Quartier de l'Amphithéâtre, home to the Centre Pompidou-Metz — the Paris institution's first satellite, opened in May 2010. The amphitheatre district attracts design-focused visitors and sits a 10-minute walk from the train station.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: TGV from Paris Gare de l'Est reaches Metz in approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
- Best season: June through September for riverside terraces along the Moselle; December for the Marché de Noël on Place Saint-Louis.
- Day trips: Verdun battlefield memorials lie 75 km west; Luxembourg City is 62 km north by regional train.
