Montpellier sits in southern France, 10 km from the Mediterranean coast and roughly 170 km west of Marseille. The Musée Fabre holds one of France's largest fine-arts collections outside Paris, with works by Courbet, Delacroix, and Frédéric Bazille, who was born in Montpellier in 1841.

Montpellier Méditerranée Airport connects to major European hubs, with flights to London, Amsterdam, and several Spanish cities. The TGV links the city to Paris Gare de Lyon in approximately 3 hours 20 minutes.
