About Nancy
Nancy: Lorraine's Baroque Showpiece
Nancy, the historic capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, anchors northeastern France roughly 300 km east of Paris. Place Stanislas, completed in 1755 under Duke Stanislas Leszczyński and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, forms the centrepiece — its gilded ironwork gates by Jean Lamour are among the finest examples of 18th-century decorative metalwork in Europe. The adjacent Place de la Carrière and Hemicycle extend the ensemble into a coherent royal axis that few French provincial cities can match.
Beyond Baroque, Nancy holds a second architectural identity as a cradle of Art Nouveau. The École de Nancy, active from the 1890s to around 1910, produced glassmaker Émile Gallé, furniture designer Louis Majorelle, and architect Lucien Weissenburger. The Musée de l'École de Nancy on Rue du Sergent Blandan displays their work in an original period villa. Visitors typically pair the museum with a walk through the Quartier de la Commanderie, where several Majorelle-designed façades survive on residential streets.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: TGV trains from Paris Gare de l'Est reach Nancy in approximately 90 minutes.
- Base neighbourhood: Hotels on or within two blocks of Place Stanislas offer walkable access to both the Baroque axis and the Old Town market on Place Henri-Mengin.
- Season: The Christmas market on Place Stanislas runs late November through late December and draws significant crowds; book accommodation several weeks ahead.
