About Neuf-Brisach

Neuf-Brisach: Vauban's Octagonal Fortress on the Rhine

Neuf-Brisach sits on the Alsace plain 70 km south of Strasbourg, 4 km west of the Rhine. Louis XIV commissioned military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban to design the town after France ceded Breisach to Austria in 1697. Construction ran from 1698 to 1703, producing a perfectly octagonal fortified town enclosed by a double ring of walls, bastions, and moats. UNESCO inscribed it in 2008 as part of the Vauban Fortifications World Heritage Site — one of 12 Vauban sites across France.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

The town's 3,000 residents live inside the original grid streets, a layout unchanged since the 18th century. Hotels are small and concentrated near the Place d'Armes, the central parade square. The German city of Freiburg im Breisgau lies 25 km east across the Rhine, reachable by car via the Pont de l'Europe. The nearest train station is at Colmar, 18 km north, with TGV connections to Paris Gare de l'Est in around 2 hours 20 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Walking the ramparts: The full perimeter walk covers roughly 3 km; allow 1–1.5 hours.
  • Vauban Museum: Located inside the Porte de Belfort, the gate museum opens April–October.
  • Day trips: Colmar's old town and the Route des Vins d'Alsace start 18 km north.
