About Romagne

Romagne-sous-Montfaucon: Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery

Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, in the Meuse department of Grand Est, holds the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery — the largest American military burial ground in Europe. Dedicated in 1937, it contains 14,246 graves spread across 52 hectares of the former Western Front battlefield. The village sits roughly 35 km northwest of Verdun, within the Argonne Forest sector where the Allies launched their decisive September–November 1918 offensive.

Visitors come almost entirely for remembrance and First World War history. The cemetery draws American families tracing ancestors who fell during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the costliest battle in U.S. military history with over 26,000 American dead. The adjacent visitor centre, rebuilt in 2013 by the American Battle Monuments Commission, holds personal effects, maps, and a searchable database of the fallen. The village itself has fewer than 200 permanent residents; the surrounding hillsides still show shell craters and preserved trench lines accessible on marked trails.

Accommodation in Romagne is limited — a small gîte and chambres d'hôtes serve most overnight visitors. The nearest larger hotel stock is in Verdun, 35 km south via the D38. The cemetery is open daily; the visitor centre closes on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
