About Valencisse

Valencisse: Rural Gateway to Loire Château Country

Valencisse is a commune in the Loir-et-Cher department of Centre-Val de Loire, created in 2016 from the merger of several villages including Chitenay and Fougères-sur-Bièvre. It sits roughly 15 km south of Blois on the southern fringe of the Loire Valley UNESCO World Heritage corridor. The landscape is agricultural — asparagus fields, vineyards of the Cheverny AOC, and hedgerow bocage — with almost no urban infrastructure.

Fougères-sur-Bièvre anchors the commune's historic identity: its 15th-century fortified château predates the Loire Renaissance wave, presenting a medieval military silhouette at odds with the ornate palaces that dominate tourist brochures nearby. Château de Cheverny, one of the valley's most intact furnished châteaux, lies 12 km southeast. Château de Chambord, the largest Loire château, is 30 km east.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: A car is essential — Valencisse has no direct rail service. Blois station (TER from Paris-Austerlitz, approximately 1 h 40 min) is the nearest rail hub.
  • Cycling: The Loire à Vélo long-distance route passes through the region; April to October offers the most reliable conditions.
  • Accommodation type: Chambres d'hôtes and rural gîtes dominate locally; larger hotel stock is in Blois or Contres (8 km south).
  • Local market: Contres holds a Friday morning market selling regional produce.
