About Fira
Fira: Capital on the Santorini Caldera Rim
Fira is the administrative capital of Santorini, perched on the western edge of the volcanic caldera at roughly 260 metres above sea level. The town traces its present layout to rebuilding after the 1956 earthquake, which destroyed much of the older settlement of Skaro. Today, whitewashed lanes run from the Museum of Prehistoric Thera — housing Minoan-era finds from the Akrotiri excavation site — to the cable car station that descends to the old port (Skala) below. The Archaeological Museum of Thera, housed in a neoclassical building near the bus terminal, holds artefacts spanning the Archaic to Roman periods.
Where to Stay in Fira
Accommodation ranges from caldera-view cave hotels carved into the pumice cliff face to standard guesthouses on the inland side of town. The adjoining neighbourhoods of Firostefani and Imerovigli begin immediately north of Fira's centre, offering quieter caldera-rim stays within a 10–15 minute walk. Budget-oriented properties cluster along Erythrou Stavrou, the main commercial street running through the centre.
Practical Tips

- Timing: May and October offer shorter museum queues compared with July–August peak season.
- Currency: Greece uses the euro (€); several ATMs operate on Erythrou Stavrou.
