About Ios Chora

Ios Chora: Whitewashed Cyclades Above the Aegean

Ios Chora sits on a hillside above the port of Gialos on Ios island, in the southern Cyclades, roughly 180 km southeast of Athens by sea. The village clusters around a ridge at about 150 m elevation, with 365 churches by local count, blue-domed chapels, and narrow stepped lanes that predate motorised traffic. The windmills above the ridge date to the Venetian period and remain a reference point for the entire island. Homer's tomb is traditionally placed at the northern tip of the island, drawing classicists alongside the summer crowd.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses concentrate along the Chora–Mylopotas corridor. Mylopotas beach, 2 km downhill from the Chora by road, anchors the island's party reputation and has the densest accommodation. Quieter options sit within the Chora itself or on the approach road from Gialos port. The island hosts around 30–40 registered accommodation properties, ranging from small family-run rooms to mid-range hotels with pool terraces facing the caldera-free Aegean.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Ferries from Piraeus take 5–7 hours; high-speed catamarans cut that to roughly 3.5 hours.
  • Best season: Mid-June through August draws the largest crowds; May and September offer calmer conditions.
  • Local transport: A frequent bus connects Gialos port, Chora, and Mylopotas beach from morning until late night in summer.
  • Pack light layers for Chora evenings — the ridge catches wind even in July.
