About Fourni Ikarias
Fourni Ikarias: Aegean Fishing Archipelago
Fourni Ikarias is a cluster of small islands in the eastern Aegean, roughly 15 km south of Ikaria and 20 km west of Samos. The main island, Fourni, holds a compact port village where fishing boats unload octopus and red mullet daily — the island supplies a significant share of the fresh fish sold across the North Aegean. The population sits around 1,500, and the road network ends quickly, giving way to footpaths connecting coves and deserted beaches like Kambi and Chrysomilia.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is small-scale: rooms above the port, a handful of guesthouses in the village lanes, and a few seaside studios near Thymaina, the second inhabited islet. Hotels are simple and independently run. Ferries connect Fourni to Karlovassi (Samos) and Evdilos (Ikaria) several times weekly via Hellenic Seaways routes.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ferry from Piraeus takes roughly 8-9 hours; faster connections run from Karlovassi in about 1 hour.
- Best season: May–September; August sees Athenian visitors but crowds remain modest.
- Cash: Carry euros from Ikaria or Samos — ATM availability on Fourni is limited.
- Archaeology: Underwater surveys since 2015 have identified over 50 ancient shipwrecks in surrounding waters, making Fourni one of the richest wreck sites in the Mediterranean.
