About Samos
Samos: Eastern Aegean Island at the Edge of Greece
Samos sits in the eastern Aegean Sea, roughly 1.5 km from the Turkish coast at its narrowest point — closer to Kuşadası than to Athens. The island of 33,000 residents produced the mathematician Pythagoras around 570 BC and the philosopher Epicurus; both names appear on streets and squares throughout the island. The Heraion of Samos, a UNESCO-listed sanctuary of Hera dating to the 7th century BC, stands 6 km west of Pythagoreion — the ancient harbour town — and anchors the island's archaeological identity.
Where to Stay in Samos
Most hotels cluster around three areas. Vathy (Samos Town), the capital on the north coast, holds the island's main ferry port and the Archaeological Museum of Samos, which houses the 5-metre kouros statue found at the Heraion. Kokkari, 10 km west of Vathy, draws windsurfers to its pebble beach and retains older stone architecture. Pythagoreion on the south coast offers calmer water and direct access to the Roman and Byzantine ruins of the Eupalinos Tunnel — a 1,036-metre aqueduct cut through limestone circa 524 BC.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Samos International Airport (SMI) receives seasonal charters from northern Europe; ferry connections run from Piraeus (14 hrs overnight) and Kusadasi.
- Best season: May–June and September offer temperatures around 25 °C with smaller crowds than July–August.
- Currency: Euro (EUR); ATMs available in Vathy and Pythagoreion.
- Island transport: Buses link main towns; car hire recommended for villages such as Manolates and Votsalakia.
