About Molyvos
Molyvos
Molyvos — known officially as Mithymna — sits on the north coast of Lesbos, roughly 62 km from the island capital Mytilene. A medieval Genoese castle crowns the hilltop above the village, visible from the Turkish coast less than 10 km across the Aegean. The castle dates to Byzantine foundations, rebuilt by the Genoese in the 14th century, and frames the terracotta rooftops that step down to a small fishing harbor below.
Visitors arrive for the combination of preserved Ottoman-era stone architecture, pebbly beaches within walking distance, and a quieter pace than Mykonos or Santorini. The harbor front holds seafood tavernas serving fresh catch landed each morning. Artists have been drawn here since the 1960s — the village's light and verticality attracted several European painters who settled long-term. Hikers follow trails along the volcanic hillsides toward Eftalou, 4 km northeast, where thermal springs feed a small bathhouse open to the public.
Molyvos has one main bus connection to Mytilene; most visitors arrive by car or taxi from Mytilene International Airport (MJT), a journey of about 70 minutes. The village has no large resort hotels — accommodation runs to stone-built guesthouses and small boutique properties within the castle quarter or along the harbor road.
