About Naxos Chora

Naxos Chora: Marble Alleys and Aegean Horizons

Naxos Chora (also called Naxos Town) sits on the west coast of Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades, roughly 130 km southeast of Athens by ferry. The old town climbs a rocky headland crowned by a Venetian Kastro, built in the 13th century and still inhabited today. Below it, a maze of narrow marble-paved lanes connects the Bourgo quarter to the waterfront, where fishing boats and high-speed catamarans share the same quay.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster along the Agios Georgios beach strip, a 10-minute walk south of the port, or inside and just below the Kastro walls for travellers who prefer a quieter atmosphere. A smaller selection of guesthouses occupies the Grotta area north of the port, facing a shallow bay where ancient Cycladic ruins are visible at low tide.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Ferries from Piraeus take 4–5 hours; fast catamarans cut this to around 3 hours.
  • Getting around: Ktel buses connect Chora to interior villages like Apiranthos and beach towns like Agia Anna several times daily.
  • Best season: May–June and September offer full ferry schedules without August crowds.
  • Currency: Euro (€); most waterfront restaurants accept cards.
