About Xanthi
Xanthi: Thrace's Ottoman Old Town and Tobacco Heritage
Xanthi sits in northeastern Greece, roughly 280 km east of Thessaloniki and 70 km from the port of Kavala. The city's Old Town (Παλιά Πόλη) preserves over 500 mansions built during the 19th-century tobacco boom, their colourful facades lining steep cobblestone lanes. The Old Bazaar remains an active market where Greek, Turkish, and Pomak communities trade daily — a living reflection of Thrace's layered history under Byzantine, Ottoman, and Greek rule.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels cluster near Mitropoleos Square or along 28is Oktovriou Street, within walking distance of the Old Town. A smaller selection of guesthouses occupies the historic quarter itself. The Nestos River delta, a Natura 2000 wetland, lies 25 km southwest and draws birdwatchers and kayakers. Vistonida Lake is 30 km to the east. Regional buses connect Xanthi to Komotini (45 min) and Kavala (1 hr).

- Old Town access: Most historic lanes are pedestrian-only; park near the central market.

- Climate: Summers reach 35 °C; winters are mild but wet.
