About Nea Potidea
Nea Potidea
Nea Potidea sits at the narrow isthmus where the Kassandra peninsula meets the Greek mainland in Halkidiki. The Potidea Canal — cut through the isthmus to allow small vessels passage — is the village's most recognisable landmark and marks the gateway to Kassandra, the westernmost of Halkidiki's three peninsulas. The original ancient city of Potidaea stood here and was besieged by Athens in 432 BC, giving the location one of the longest documented histories in northern Greece.
Visitors arrive mainly between June and September. The draw is straightforward: calm, sandy beaches on both the Toroneos Gulf side and the Thermaic Gulf side, within walking distance of each other. Families with children favour the sheltered shallow waters on the canal's southern edge. Watersports hire is available at the main beach strip. The village centre has a small waterfront with tavernas serving fresh catch from the gulf.
Nea Potidea is 75 km southeast of Thessaloniki by road, making it a realistic day trip from the city but more commonly a 5- to 10-night base for beach holidays. The nearest airport is Thessaloniki Makedonia International (SKG), roughly 80 km away. Most accommodation options are small family-run hotels and apartments clustered along the beachfront road.
