About Skopelos Town
Skopelos Town: White Houses Above the Aegean
Skopelos Town (also called Chora) climbs a pine-backed hillside on the northeastern coast of Skopelos island, part of the Northern Sporades group in the Aegean Sea. More than 120 whitewashed churches dot the ridgeline — a count that gives the town its nickname among Greek travel writers. The harbor front preserves Byzantine-era foundations, and the Venetian kastro at the summit frames unobstructed views across to Alonnisos island.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate along the Paralia (waterfront) and in the stone lanes immediately behind it. Properties range from family-run guesthouses to boutique rooms in restored 19th-century houses. The 2008 film Mamma Mia! was partly shot on Skopelos, and the steep blue-doored alleyways of Chora appear in several scenes, drawing visitors year-round.
Practical Tips
- Ferry access: Hellenic Seaways connects Skopelos Town to Volos (approx. 3 hours) and Agios Konstantinos (approx. 4.5 hours).
- Season: Most hotels operate May–October; the harbor quiets after mid-September.
- Getting around: The town center is walkable; rental scooters and taxis reach outlying beaches such as Stafilos and Limnonari.
