About Kassandra
Kassandra: Halkidiki's Western Peninsula
Kassandra is the westernmost of the three finger-shaped peninsulas extending from Halkidiki, northern Greece, roughly 70 km southeast of Thessaloniki. The peninsula stretches about 50 km and narrows to as little as 1 km at the Nea Potidaia canal, an artificial channel cut at the neck where an ancient city once stood. Pine forests meet sandy coves along both the Toroneos Gulf (west coast) and the Thermaic Gulf (east coast), giving each shoreline a distinct character — calmer waters to the west, more exposed beaches to the east.
Where to Stay
Resort hotels and apartment complexes concentrate in Kallithea, Hanioti, and Pefkochori on the west coast. Sani Resort, a large-scale complex near the peninsula's tip, hosts an annual summer arts festival that draws international performers. Budget travelers find smaller guesthouses in Polychrono and Kriopigi. Most accommodation operates May through October; the peninsula is largely closed to visitors in winter.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) is the entry point; rental cars and KTEL buses reach Kassandra in 60–90 minutes.
- Best timing: July and August bring peak crowds and higher rates; June and September offer quieter beaches.
- Currency: Euro (EUR); ATMs available in Nea Potidaia and Hanioti.
- Beach access: Most beaches are public; some resort-adjacent stretches charge sunbed fees.
