About Nuuk
Nuuk: Arctic Capital at the Edge of the World's Largest Island
Nuuk sits at 64°N on the southwestern coast of Greenland, where the Nuup Kangerlua fjord system — one of the world's largest fjord networks — meets the Davis Strait. Founded as a colonial trading post by Hans Egede in 1728, it is the world's northernmost capital city with a population of roughly 19,000. The Greenland National Museum on Imaneq street holds the Qilakitsoq mummies, five-century-old preserved remains found in 1972 that draw researchers from across Scandinavia. The Katuaq Cultural Centre, designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen and opened in 1997, anchors the city's arts calendar year-round.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate in the Nuussuaq and Kolonihavn neighbourhoods, within walking distance of the old colonial harbour and the Hans Egede statue. The Hotel Hans Egede on Aqq. 1–5 is the city's tallest building at 11 floors and offers views across the fjord. Visitors arriving by the Mittarfeqarfiit domestic air network from Kangerlussuaq or Ilulissat typically book one to three nights here before or after longer wilderness itineraries. Northern lights are visible from Nuuk on clear nights between September and March.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: No transatlantic flights land directly in Nuuk; connect via Copenhagen (Air Greenland, ~4 hrs) or Reykjavik (Air Iceland Connect, ~2.5 hrs).
- Currency: Danish krone (DKK) is the standard currency; cards accepted at most hotels.
- Season: Pack waterproof layers regardless of month — summer highs average 10 °C; January averages −8 °C.
- Booking ahead: Hotel supply is limited to roughly 30–40 properties across all categories; reserve at least six weeks in advance during July–August.
