About Bissau
Bissau: Capital on the Geba Estuary
Bissau sits on the southern bank of the Geba River estuary, roughly 60 km from the Atlantic coast, and serves as the political and commercial centre of Guinea-Bissau. The city's colonial-era core, the Bissau Velho quarter, retains Portuguese-built facades and the Fortaleza d'Amura, an 18th-century fort that once anchored the slave trade routes. Praça dos Heróis Nacionais marks the civic heart of the modern city, a short walk from the busy Bandim Market, where vendors sell kola nuts, dried fish, and local textiles.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate along Avenida do Brasil and around the Bairro de Penha district. Most properties are small guesthouses and mid-range business hotels; international-brand chains are absent. Visitors arrive mainly for government business, NGO work, or as a gateway to the Bijagós Archipelago, a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve of 88 islands reachable by ferry from Bissau's port.
Practical Tips
- Currency: West African CFA franc (XOF); ATMs are limited — carry cash.
- Language: Portuguese is official; Crioulo is the widely spoken lingua franca.
- Climate: Dry season runs November to April; travel during these months to avoid road closures from heavy rain.
- Health: Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry.
