About Balatonfüred

Balatonfüred: Spa Heritage on Lake Balaton's Northern Shore

Balatonfüred sits on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, Hungary's largest lake at 77 km long, roughly 120 km southwest of Budapest. The town has functioned as a medicinal spa resort since the 18th century, centred on the Széchenyi Spring, whose carbonated mineral water drew Central European aristocrats, writers, and statesmen. The Anna Ball, held annually since 1825, is one of Hungary's oldest continuous social events and takes place each July at the Horváth House on the promenade.

Where to Stay

Hotels concentrate along the Tagore Promenade, a lakeside walkway named after Rabindranath Tagore, who convalesced here in 1926 and planted a linden tree that still stands. Properties range from 19th-century thermal hotels to modern lakeside guesthouses. The Balatonfüred-Csopak wine district wraps around the town, and vineyard guesthouses operate a few kilometres inland on the hillside slopes above the lake.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Direct trains from Budapest Déli station take approximately 1.5 hours; the station sits about 1 km north of the waterfront.
  • Tihany: The Tihany Peninsula, home to an 11th-century Benedictine Abbey, lies 3 km west by road and is reachable by seasonal ferry from the town pier.
  • Season: July and August bring peak crowds; September offers quieter beaches and harvest-season wine events across the Csopak hillsides.
  • Thermal access: The Annagora Aquapark and several hotel thermal baths provide year-round mineral water bathing.
