About Akureyri

Akureyri: Capital of the Icelandic North

Akureyri sits at the head of Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord, roughly 100 km south of the Arctic Circle. With a population around 20,000, it is Iceland's second-largest urban centre and the undisputed hub of the north. The city is known for mild microclimate conditions relative to its latitude — sheltered by mountains on three sides, it records more sunshine hours than Reykjavík. The Akureyrarkirkja church, designed by Guðjón Samúelsson and completed in 1940, anchors the hillside skyline above the harbour.

Where to Stay in Akureyri

Most hotels cluster near Hafnarstræti, the main pedestrian street, or along the waterfront. Staying central puts guests within walking distance of the Akureyri Botanical Garden — one of the northernmost public gardens in the world, free to enter. The city serves as a base for whale watching on Eyjafjörður, day trips to Lake Mývatn (100 km east), and winter access to Hlíðarfjall ski resort, 8 km from the city centre.

Practical Tips

  • Getting here: Domestic flights from Reykjavík take 45 minutes; the Ring Road drive is approximately 390 km.
  • Season: Northern lights are visible October–March; midnight sun peaks in June.
  • Currency: Icelandic króna (ISK); card payments accepted almost universally.
  • Parking: Free parking is available on most central streets outside peak summer weekends.
