About Capannori

Capannori

Capannori is a sprawling municipality in the province of Lucca, Tuscany, that wraps around the city of Lucca on three sides. Unlike a compact historic centre, Capannori is a mosaic of roughly 50 villages and hamlets — Marlia, Segromigno in Monte, Lammari, Pieve di Compito — spread across the flat Lucchese plain and the first foothills of the Pizzorne range. The territory is defined by patrician villas built between the 16th and 18th centuries for Lucca's merchant aristocracy; Villa Reale di Marlia, redesigned for Napoleon's sister Elisa Baciocchi after 1806, is among the best preserved, with formal Italian gardens open to the public.

Visitors come for agritourism, cycling routes along country lanes lined with cypress and plane trees, and access to Lucca itself — the walled city sits just 5–10 km from most of Capannori's villages. The area produces extra-virgin olive oil under the Lucca DOP designation and is part of the broader Strada dell'Olio e del Vino delle Colline Lucchesi. Autumn brings the olive harvest and a series of local sagre celebrating chestnut and mushroom dishes.

Capannori covers approximately 156 sq km, making it one of the largest municipalities in Tuscany by area. The nearest airport is Pisa Galileo Galilei, roughly 30 km to the southwest, with Florence Peretola airport approximately 80 km east.
