About Vecchiano

Vecchiano: Gateway to the Migliarino-San Rossore Massarosa Park

Vecchiano is a small commune in the Province of Pisa, Tuscany, roughly 12 km north of Pisa's Leaning Tower along the Serchio River. The municipality sits at the edge of the Parco Regionale Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli, a protected coastal pine forest and wetland stretching over 24,000 hectares between Pisa and Viareggio. Visitors arrive primarily for cycling trails through the maritime pines, birdwatching on Lake Massaciuccoli — where Giacomo Puccini composed several operas at his villa in nearby Torre del Lago — and low-key agritourism in the surrounding flatlands.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Vecchiano centres on family-run agriturismi and small guesthouses rather than large hotel chains. The hamlet of Nodica and the village centre offer the closest lodging to the park's northern entrance. Guests travelling without a car should note that Pisa Centrale station is approximately 15 minutes by regional bus, providing rail links to Florence (1 hr 20 min) and Livorno (20 min).

Practical Tips

  • Best season: April–June for mild temperatures and park wildflowers; August draws Italian holiday crowds to the Versilia coast nearby.
  • Getting around: A bicycle is the most practical way to explore the park trails; rentals are available in Pisa and some local agriturismi.
  • Day trips: Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli is 12 km south; Lucca's medieval walls are 20 km northeast.
