About Viareggio
Viareggio: Liberty Architecture on the Tyrrhenian Shore
Viareggio sits on the Versilia coast of Tuscany, 25 km west of Lucca and roughly 90 km from Florence. The city faces the Tyrrhenian Sea along a 4 km sandy beach backed by the Passeggiata, a seafront promenade lined with Art Nouveau — locally called Liberty style — bathhouses, cafés, and pavilions rebuilt after a fire destroyed the original wooden structures in 1917. The Gran Caffè Margherita, designed by ceramicist Galileo Chini, is among the most photographed examples of the era.
Viareggio draws three distinct visitor profiles: beach holidaymakers who fill the resort from June through August; Carnival fans arriving each February for the Carnevale di Viareggio, founded in 1873 and renowned for its enormous papier-mâché floats; and travellers using the city as a base for day trips to Lucca, Pisa, and the Apuan Alps marble quarries inland.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Viareggio station links directly to Pisa (20 min) and Florence (1.5 hr) on the Tirrenica line.
- Beach access: Most stretches are operated by private bagni (beach clubs); free public sand exists at the northern end near Torre del Lago Puccini.
- Carnival timing: Float parades run on five Sundays in February — book accommodation at least three months ahead during those weekends.
