About Forte dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi: Versilia's Marble-Fort Shore

Forte dei Marmi sits on the Versilia coast of northern Tuscany, roughly 35 km north of Pisa and 100 km west of Florence. The town takes its name from the octagonal fort built in 1788 by Grand Duke Leopold II to store marble blocks hauled down from the Apuan Alps before shipment. Today that fort anchors the central piazza, framed by pine groves that run parallel to 3 km of white-sand beach on the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Summer draws a mix of affluent Italian families, northern European visitors, and fashion-industry figures attracted by the calibre of the beachfront stabilimenti and the boutique-lined Via Francesca. The Apuan Alps, visible from the shore, offer hiking access to active Carrara marble quarries roughly 15 km northeast — a sharp contrast to the resort's polished promenade.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Forte dei Marmi station links to the Pisa–La Spezia rail line; the town centre is a 10-minute walk or taxi ride from the platform.
  • Season: Peak season runs mid-June to late August; shoulder months (May and September) offer cooler temperatures and lower rates.
  • Beach access: Private stabilimenti dominate the shoreline; public beach access points exist at the north and south ends of town.
  • Day trips: Lucca is 40 km southeast by train; Cinque Terre is reachable in under two hours via La Spezia.
