About Lerici
Lerici: Castle Town on the Gulf of La Spezia
Lerici sits on the eastern shore of the Gulf of La Spezia, Liguria, roughly 8 km south of La Spezia city centre. The town is anchored by the Castello di Lerici, a 13th-century Pisan-Genoese fortress that rises directly above the harbour. Percy Bysshe Shelley lived here in 1822 at Villa Magni in nearby San Terenzo before drowning in the gulf that August — a fact that draws literary travellers alongside the usual coastal crowd.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along the lungomare promenade and in the lanes between Piazza Garibaldi and the castle hill. Smaller guesthouses occupy the hillside above Baia Blu, the main pebble beach. The town has fewer than 40 lodging options, so rooms fill quickly in July and August. Porto Venere, 12 km west by ferry, offers an alternative base with UNESCO World Heritage status.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Trains stop at La Spezia Centrale; local buses or a 15-minute taxi cover the remaining 8 km to Lerici.
- Crowds: Peak season runs late June through August — book at least six weeks ahead.
- Day trips: Cinque Terre villages are 20–40 minutes by ferry from Lerici in summer.
- Castle hours: The Castello di Lerici houses a geopaleontology museum; check seasonal closures before visiting.
