About Costa Sant'Abramo
Costa Sant'Abramo
Costa Sant'Abramo is a small coastal locality within the municipality of Palmi, in Calabria's province of Reggio Calabria. It occupies a stretch of the Costa Viola — named for the violet tones the sea takes at dusk — roughly 50 kilometres north of Reggio Calabria along the Tyrrhenian shore. On clear days the horizon frames the silhouettes of the Aeolian Islands, and the Strait of Messina opens to the south. The shoreline consists of dark volcanic sand mixed with pebbles, characteristic of this corner of southern Calabria.
Visitors arrive mainly between June and September for the beach season. The nearby town of Palmi, about 3 kilometres inland, adds cultural depth: its Museo Calabrese di Etnografia e Folklore documents regional traditions, and the Varia di Palmi — a UNESCO-recognised baroque procession — takes place every four years. Palmi's daily fish market keeps local restaurants stocked with fresh swordfish, anchovies, and tuna typical of Calabrian coastal cooking.
Accommodation around Costa Sant'Abramo runs toward small family-run hotels, agriturismi, and seasonal apartments rather than large branded chains. Palmi railway station, on the Reggio Calabria–Paola line, links to Reggio Calabria in around 40 minutes and to Naples in roughly 4 hours via Trenitalia. Lamezia Terme Airport (SUF), approximately 90 kilometres north, serves as the main air gateway for the region.
