About Castelvetro Piacentino

Castelvetro Piacentino

Castelvetro Piacentino sits on the southern bank of the Po River in the Province of Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna. The comune takes its name from a medieval fortification — castel meaning castle — that once marked this crossing point between Lombardy and the Emilian plain. Today the flat agricultural landscape around the village is planted with wheat, sunflowers, and maize, typical of the Po Valley floor. The Lombardy border lies just across the river, making Castelvetro Piacentino a transitional stop between two of Italy's most productive agricultural regions.

Visitors are typically travellers passing between Piacenza city and Cremona, or those exploring the rural Po Delta hinterland away from major tourist circuits. The area draws cyclists following the Via Francigena variants and anglers who work the Po's wide gravel banks. Local cuisine follows the Piacenza tradition: pisarei e fasò (gnocchetti with beans), coppa piacentina DOP, and Gutturnio DOC red wine produced in the Colli Piacentini hills a short drive south.

The comune has a resident population of around 6,000. Piacenza city, with its Romanesque cathedral and Farnese Palace, is approximately 25 km to the northwest. Cremona, known for its violin-making heritage and the Torrazzo bell tower, sits roughly 20 km northeast across the Po. Both cities are reachable by regional road in under 30 minutes, making Castelvetro Piacentino a practical base for travellers who prefer quieter, lower-cost accommodation outside provincial centres.
