About Lari
Lari
Lari sits on a ridge in the Valdera district of Tuscany, province of Pisa, roughly 30 km east of Pisa's Galileo Galilei Airport. The town is anchored by the Castello dei Vicari, a medieval fortress with origins in the 10th century. Florentine magistrates used it as a seat of justice from the 15th century onward, and its courtrooms and tower remain open to visitors today. The historic center is compact, built around steep lanes and stone arches that link the castle quarter to the lower borgo.
Lari draws two main types of traveller: those on a Tuscany road trip who want a quieter base away from the coach-tour crowds of San Gimignano or Volterra, and visitors who arrive each June for the Sagra delle Ciliegie, the town's cherry festival. Lari's cherry orchards — mainly the local Ciliegia di Lari variety — are well known across the province. The surrounding Valdera countryside offers cycling routes through olive groves and vineyards between Pontedera and the Pisan hills.
Accommodation near Lari consists mainly of agriturismi and small rural hotels within a few kilometres of the castle. Pontedera, 10 km north, provides a wider range of services and a rail connection to Pisa Centrale on the Pisa–Collesalvetti–Vada line.
