Siberia: Mountain Hamlet in the Marche

Siberia is a small mountain hamlet in the Marche region of central Italy, positioned in the Apennine hills near Fabriano at roughly 900 metres above sea level. The name, unusual for an Italian village, reflects the harsh winters that once defined life here among the forested ridges of the Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi natural park. Stone farmhouses and narrow lanes characterise the settlement, which sits within a landscape shaped by limestone gorges and beech woodland rather than coastal tourism.

Visitors come primarily for outdoor pursuits: hiking trails connect Siberia to the wider Apennine network, and the Frasassi Caves — one of Europe's largest cave systems, open to the public since 1974 — lie within easy reach by car. The area draws naturalists, cyclists, and travellers seeking quiet rural accommodation away from Umbria's more crowded circuits. Fabriano, about 15 kilometres to the west, has produced handmade paper since the 13th century and offers a small but notable museum dedicated to that craft.
