Plan your stay in Lucca, Tuscany — a walled Renaissance city with intact 4.2 km ramparts, Roman ruins, Puccini's birthplace, and easy rail links to Florence.
Lucca is a walled city in Tuscany, northwest of Florence by about 80 km. Its Renaissance walls — completed in 1645 and stretching roughly 4.2 km — remain intact and wide enough to walk or cycle on top. The historic center sits almost entirely within those walls, preserving a medieval street grid, Roman-era foundations, and more than 100 churches. The oval Piazza dell'Anfiteatro traces the outline of a 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, its medieval houses built directly onto the old seating tiers.
Visitors come for the architecture, the relative quiet compared to Florence or Pisa, and the food. Lucca sits in a region known for olive oil and a local pasta called tordelli — a stuffed pasta with meat ragù. The city also draws music fans: composer Giacomo Puccini was born here in 1858, and the Casa Natale Puccini museum on Via di Poggio preserves his birthplace. Each summer, Lucca Summer Festival brings major international acts to Piazza Napoleone, a large square just inside the western walls.
Pisa's Galileo Galilei Airport is approximately 20 km west — the most convenient air entry point. Lucca has its own train station just outside the southern walls, with direct regional services to Florence (roughly 80 minutes) and Pisa (about 30 minutes). Most of the historic center is closed to private vehicles, so hotels within the walls are typically reached on foot from the station.
