About Ossana

Ossana

Ossana sits at 1,003 metres in Val di Sole, Trentino, roughly 70 km west of Trento along the SS42. The village is anchored by Castel San Michele, a 13th-century fortress perched on a rocky spur above the Noce river — one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the region and an immediate reference point for anyone arriving by road. Ossana marks the western gateway to Stelvio National Park, Italy's largest protected alpine area, covering 130,000 hectares across three provinces.

Visitors arrive primarily for mountain activity. In winter, the Ponte di LegnoTonale ski area is accessible within 15 km, offering over 100 km of pisted runs above 1,800 metres. Summer draws hikers and mountain bikers into the park trails, with the Presena Glacier visible from higher elevations year-round. The Val di Sole is also a white-water kayaking corridor; the Noce river hosts international competitions at Dimaro, 20 km downstream.

The village itself has a compact historic centre with stone buildings typical of Trentino alpine architecture. Accommodation options are small in number — mostly family-run hotels and agriturismo properties — keeping the atmosphere quieter than the larger resort towns to the east. Ossana train access runs via the TrentoMaléMezzana narrow-gauge line, with the Mezzana stop approximately 10 km away.
