About Porto Empedocle
Porto Empedocle
Porto Empedocle sits on Sicily's southern coast, 5 km west of Agrigento. The town is the main port gateway to the Pelagie Islands — ferries to Lampedusa depart from the harbour on Via Empedocle. It is also the birthplace of Andrea Camilleri, the author behind the Inspector Montalbano detective series, and a small monument near the waterfront marks that connection. The historic Aragonese tower, Torre Carlo V, anchors the seafront and dates to the 16th century.
Visitors come primarily to reach Agrigento's Valle dei Templi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site housing some of the best-preserved Doric temples outside Greece, including the Temple of Concordia built around 430 BCE. The coastal road between Porto Empedocle and Agrigento runs along limestone bluffs above the Mediterranean. The town itself has a compact fishing quarter, a working port atmosphere, and a beach strip at San Leone a few kilometres east.
The nearest major airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino, roughly 130 km north via the SS189 highway. Catania Fontanarossa is approximately 180 km to the east. Local buses connect Porto Empedocle with Agrigento's train station, which has direct regional services to Palermo.
