About Sulmona

Sulmona

Sulmona sits in the Peligna Valley of Abruzzo, 75 km east of Rome's ring road via the A25 motorway, ringed by the Maiella and Morrone massifs. The city is best known as the birthplace of the Roman poet Ovid (43 BC) and as Italy's confetti capital — not paper confetti, but sugar-coated almonds crafted here since the 15th century. The medieval aqueduct arcade running through Piazza Garibaldi, built in 1256, divides the old town into distinct halves and remains the single most-photographed structure in the city.

Visitors arrive for three reasons: the historic centre's intact Gothic and Renaissance architecture, access to Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga and Maiella national parks for hiking and skiing at Campo di Giove (18 km south), and the Giostra Cavalleresca jousting festival held each late July in the main piazza. Pilgrims also pass through on the Cammino di San Tommaso route linking Rome to the Adriatic coast.

Sulmona's hotels cluster near Corso Ovidio, the pedestrianised main street, and around the train station on Viale Stazione, where direct Intercity services reach Rome Termini in roughly 2 hours. The city hosts around 30–40 registered accommodation properties, ranging from historic palazzo conversions to family-run guesthouses.
