About Villalago
Villalago
Villalago is a medieval hill village in Abruzzo, central Italy, set above the Sagittario Gorge and Lake San Domenico, roughly 120 km east of Rome. The village dates to at least the 12th century and sits within the Majella National Park buffer zone, giving it direct access to one of Italy's most protected Apennine landscapes. Stone lanes, a Romanesque parish church, and views across the gorge define the built environment here.
Most visitors arrive between May and October to walk the Gole del Sagittario, a narrow canyon trail that passes waterfalls and medieval hermitages cut into the cliff face. The adjacent Lake Scanno, 4 km south, draws photographers for its heart-shaped outline visible from the surrounding ridgeline. Wildlife is a genuine draw: the Majella and Sirente-Velino parks together shelter wolves, Marsican brown bears, and golden eagles in credible numbers.
Accommodation in Villalago is small-scale — agriturismo properties and family-run guesthouses rather than chain hotels. The nearest rail connection is Sulmona, approximately 25 km north, reachable by regional bus. The A25 motorway links Sulmona to Rome in under 90 minutes by car.
